The Greater Minneapolis Area Chapter of the American Red Cross provides a number of unique opportunities for interns to examine, gain experience, learn from, and contribute to the nation's foremost volunteer emergency services organization. Internships are offered in the areas of International Humanitarian Law, Campaigning, Community Health & Safety, Social Work, Community Services, Disaster Coordinator, Volunteer Services, Financial Development, Marketing, Health and Safety Education, HIV/AIDS Community Health Education. The intern positions are all part-time (ranging from 8 to 20 hrs/week). Internships are offered on an on-going basis.

Central Minnesota Legal Services – St. Cloud, MN ON-GOING
Description: The mission of Central Minnesota Legal Services (CMLS) is “to provide in a highly professional manner for the basic legal needs of families and children vulnerable to abuse, violence, neglect, homelessness or major economic disruptions in their lives.” The St. Cloud office serves a nine-country region. Client eligibility is determined by residence, income requirements established according to federal poverty guidelines, and the type of legal problem. This internship is an on-going and unpaid opportunity for spring and fall.
Responsibilities: The position entails conducting client intake interviews then working with the coordinator to place the client with a private attorney. Intakes are conducted through phone and in person. Other requirements include drafting letters, and making follow-up telephone calls. Interns may be called upon to do information gathering and helping arrange Continuing Legal Education Seminars.
Requirements: Applicants should have strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills and be willing to make a time commitment.

Centro Legal, Inc. – St. Paul, MN ON-GOING

Centro Legal, Inc. provides civil legal services to low-income Latinos in Minnesota, with particular interest in representing clients who face institutional barriers or practices which may lead to a denial of their constitutional or statutory rights. Service focuses on Latinos who are monolingual Spanish speaking and in poverty.  The intern would review, screen, and conduct initial preparation of a subgroup of immigration cases that are eligible for relief under a new immigration law called the LIFE Act. In each case, the final product will be a completed application resulting in a work permit, allowing individuals to become, or to remain, self-sufficient through obtaining lawful employment. This is a paid position.

Chrysalis - Minneapolis, MN ON-GOING

Description: Chrysalis is looking for a Legal & Resource Intern. Interns will have the opportunity to work with the lives of women and their families in diverse backgrounds. The intern may choose to work directly with the clients or have a broader role in the agency.

Responsibilities: The Legal & Resource intern is responsible for assisting the LAW Program in providing education and advocacy to women by hosting LAW Clinics and Information Sessions, offering peer support in Resource Counseling.

Intern will have to attend a 24-hour training program, facilitate two LAW Clinics and one LAW Information Session, and attend a volunteer in-service training.

Requirements: Interest in family law issues, ability to listen and respond appropriately to clients, respect of diversity, ability to work under pressure, and maintain confidentiality. A time commitment of 150 hours is required for the internship.

Resource Counseling Intern:

Description: The Resource Counseling Intern is responsible for providing support, information, and referral services to clients.
Responsibilities: Intern must attend a 24-hour Resource Counseling training program along with attending two “buddy shifts” and a Divorce Information Session. Intern must support clients and their issues and refer those who need further assistance to alternative agencies and organizations.
Requirements:  Ability to listen and respond appropriately to clients, awareness of issues affecting women and families, awareness of diversity, and ability to work under pressure and maintain confidentiality. A time commitment of 150 hours is required.

Hennepin County Attorney’s Office – Minneapolis, MN ON-GOING

Hennepin County Attorney’s Office is looking for an intern who is interested in working with the Victim/Witness Program. As an intern you would be responsible for giving victims and witnesses support in the traumatic crimes in which they have been subjected to. This internship can be up to 40 hours a week.

Description: Senator Coleman offers 3 intern sessions per year. The fall session runs from September- December, Spring runs from January-May, and Summer runs from June- August. The unpaid internships require 40 hour/week commitment.

Responsibilities: Each intern will assist the Senator and his staff with administrative duties, legislative correspondence, research, and press. Interns will have an opportunity to observe the legislative process first hand and work as a part of dynamic and professional team.

Public Defender Office for the District of Columbia - Washington, DC ON-GOING

Interns in the agency's Criminal Law Internship Program work one-on-one with one or two attorneys in the trial division. In all cases a thorough, pre-trial investigation of the facts is a prerequisite to providing clients with the highest quality representation. Although PDS employs a small staff of professional investigators, a significant portion of the agency's investigative work is accomplished by the Intern-Investigators. Dynamic interns who thrive on the challenge of interacting with a wide variety of people, speaking persuasively to strangers, working independently, and thinking on their feet is crucial.

State of Maryland Office of the Public Defender - Rockville, MD ON-GOING

The Office of the Public Defender in Montgomery County, MD is seeking students interested in working as criminal defense investigators on behalf of poor people charged with breaking the law. The OPD internship gives students an opportunity to work directly with lawyers representing indigent clients. After a week-long, thorough training program, the students spend the balance of the semester finding and interviewing witnesses in the community, taking statements, and otherwise assisting lawyers on their cases.

Hennepin County – Minneapolis, MN

Hennepin County is seeking interns for its Department of Community Corrections. Interns will learn the agency’s computer systems and the community resources Hennepin County probation officers work with as they help clients fulfill the requirements of their probation. Applicants need to be juniors or seniors with a 2.5 grade point average. Internships require a minimum of 400 hours.

HOME Line – Minneapolis, MN
HOME line is a non-profit tenant advocacy organization established in 1992. HOME Line’s mission is to provide free legal, organizing, education and advocacy services so that tenants throughout Minnesota can solve their own rental housing problems. HOME Line is currently seeking undergraduate and law school students to staff the tenant hotline. The intern would answer hotline calls from tenants, discuss the situation and respond with advice. MN Associate Builders and Contractors - Eden Prairie, MN

MN. Associate Builders and Contractors is in search of an intern for the summer. Duties will include contacting state agencies, local units of government, and individual contractors to gather research. The intern will report to the committee that is composed primarily of attorneys from both large and small law firms. The final report may form the basis for future legislation or litigation support.

Minnesota Senior Federation – St. Paul, MN

The Minnesota Senior Federation (MnSF) seeks a legal research intern to work from its state office in St. Paul.  The Federation is a statewide, nonprofit and nonpartisan organization with over 25,000 members in 12 locally-run regions. The legal research intern will work with MnSF staff to conduct research on the problem of high prescription drug prices; identify and evaluate possible approaches to the problem; and draft a report that summarizes this research and proposes solutions. Research will include an evaluation of access to prescription drug coverage, economic and political issues related to the pharmaceutical industry, current private and public approaches to expanding coverage, and proposed new state and federal approaches. This is not a paid position.

Stearns County is offering a temporary part-time administrative clerk position within the county attorney’s office. The position will assist the county attorney by researching and analyzing assigned projects, compiling reports, assuring coordinated operations and performing functions of an administrative nature. Primary responsibilities include: analyzing and preparing data/information in written form, coordinating the recruitment of a task force and advisory committee members, researching data in written form, preparing a variety of database information to assist other departments of divisions within the office and answer inquiries and requests addressed to the county attorney in accordance with general policies and operating practices. The position should have knowledge of administrative procedures and practices, the ability to coordinate multiple complex tasks in a methodical manor, be skilled in developing and using database tracking systems and be skilled in the use of spreadsheets and developing other summary tools for administrative use. Some evening and weekend hours may be required, along with travel within Stearns County or the Twin Cities area. This is a paid position at $10.00 per hour. Urban Immersion Service Retreats – Minneapolis, MN

Urban Immersion Service retreats is looking for an intern this summer to help assist their staff in leading and designing educational activities about poverty, homelessness, and social justice for groups coming for retreats. WATCH – Minneapolis, MN

WATCH is seeking interns for a court monitoring position who are interested in criminal justice, domestic abuse, sexual assault, and child abuse issues. The interns’ responsibilities center on court monitoring, however interns may be involved in other projects involving research, volunteer coordination, event planning, data entry, administrative tasks, and community education. The intern will attend a 6 hour training session, attend scheduled court proceedings outlined by staff, follow WATCH court monitoring guidelines while in the courthouse, attend three community educational programs in relation to your work with WATCH, and submit a two-page reflection paper for possible publication. This is an 8-10 hour per week position that is unpaid. The opportunity is available in the spring, with an application deadline of January 16, in the summer with an application deadline of June 2, and in the fall with an application deadline of September 15.

WomanSafe Center – Faribault, MN

WomanSafe Center works to prevent child abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence in Rice County, MN.  The organization provides rehabilitative services to victims of abuse and works for systematic change to reduce the risk of violence against women and children. Interns will research, design, and implement a plan to successfully build transitional housing in the Rice County. It will entail building community partnerships and obtaining funding and public and political support for the project. The purpose of this project is to lay the ground work to meet the immediate need for transitional housing for battered woman and children in Rice County.
