Student Profile Katie Peterson

Name: Katie Peterson
Major: Elementary Education

“I involved myself in this service to the children because I had a strong desire to make a difference in their lives," says Katie, who won a service scholarship for her work with the St. Cloud Eastside Boys and Girls Clubs. "I wanted to use my abilities to help the children reach their goals and recognize the inner potential they possess…I was also personally changed by my service experience.  I developed a deep awareness and appreciation of diversity, and my eyes were opened to the strife and struggles that exist in my own community. I grew in my respect for the children and admired their courage to face adversity. In addition, I learned that I, one single individual, have the power to make a positive impact in the lives of others.”

Katie Peterson, a CSB sophomore from Sleepy Eye, is currently pursuing a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish.  She serves as an Admission Ambassador for the CSB/SJU community and is a member of the Honors Program and the Education Club. Her commitment to service is demonstrated through her involvement in several volunteer activities.  She has dedicated her time and effort to brighten the lives of youth at the Boys and Girls Club.  She also serves as a volunteer reader at Kennedy Elementary School and participates in children’s events sponsored by the Education Club. Katie also offers her time and support to the American Cancer Society by serving as a captain for “A Night to Fight Cancer.”

In the summer months, Katie returns home to Sleepy Eye to work at a migrant head-start program that serves the Hispanic community. Next spring she will travel to Costa Rica to continue to strengthen her knowledge of the Spanish language and culture.
