Licensure 

The Education Department of the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University has been approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching (BOT) to recommend college graduates who have satisfactorily completed an appropriate teacher education program as candidates for teacher licensure in the following areas:

Elementary Education generalist (K-6) with an optional content endorsement for middle level learners in:

Grades 5-8:

  • Mathematics
  • General Science
  • Communication Arts/Literature

Grades K-8:

  • French
  • German
  • Spanish (grades K-8)

Students are also able to pursue a minor in Secondary Education to gain a teaching license in the following content/teaching major areas:

Grades K-12:

  • Art
  • French
  • German
  • Music  
  • Spanish
  • Teaching English as a Second Language (minor)

Grades 5-12:

  • English 
  • Mathematics
  • Social Science 
  • Natural Science*

Grades 9-12:

  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Physics 

Non-licensure teacher preparation also exists for a minor in Teaching English as an International Language or a major in Theology.  

*Natural Science is an innovative program combines two Minnesota teaching licenses into one major: Biology, Chemistry of Physics grades 9-12 & General Science, grades 5-8. The result is a powerful combination of courses designed for students seeking Minnesota licensure in grades 5-12 to teach in the natural sciences.
