Licensures in the Sciences 5-8 and 9-12

GENERAL SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR 5-8

Requirements for MN licensure in General Science 5-8.  A BA degree in any subject area is required to apply for this license.  (This is not a major.  This licensure sequence, in combination with an area of focus in Biology, Chemistry or Physics constitutes a major in Naural Science teaching.  These areas of focus are listed below.)

Biology (Life Science) 9-12

Requirements for MN licensure in Life Science 9-12.  A BA degree in any subject area is required to apply for this license.  This is not a major.

(The following additional courses are required for a Biology major -- BIOL 348 Biology Seminar Series (1), CHEM 123 (4) and CHEM 234 (4), plus one course in Mathematics from MATH 119, 118, or 124.  The Biology major is not required for the licensure, provided a major in another subject area is completed.)

CHEMISTRY 9-12 

Requirements for MN licensrue in Chemistry 9-12.  A BA degree in any subject area is required to apply for this license.  This is not a major.

(The following additional courses are required for a CHEM major: CHEM 333 or 334, 336, 341, BCHM 321, one credit of research, MATH 119, 120, PHYS 191 and 200 OR PHYS 105 and 106.  The CHEM major is not required for the licensure, provided a major in another subject area is completed.)

PHYSICS 9-12

Requirements for MN licensure in Physics 9-12.  A BA degree in any subject area is required to apply for this license.  This is not a major.

The following additional courses are required for a PHYS major: PHYS 339, 341, 343, 344, 346, 372, 373, 2 semesters of 370, and 6 additional upper-division PHYS credits, plus MATH 305 and 341.  (The PHYS major is not required for the licensure, provided a major in another subject area is completed.)
