Elementary Education (K-6) Major Sequence with a 5-8 or K-8 Specialty

Areas of Specialty for Elementary Education Majors

Elementary Education majors are required to complete a specialty area for licensure in grades 5-8 or K-8 in one of the following areas: Communication Arts/Literature, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, or World Languages (French, German or Spanish). (Credits are shown in parentheses after the course title)

Communication Arts and Literature

(This specialty includes coursework in speaking, writing, and literature)
  • COMM 111 Public Speaking (4) OR COMM 205 Interpersonal Communication (4)
  • EDUC 216 Literature for Young Adults, grades 5-12 (2) (Fall only)
  • THEA 260 Theater and Youth (2) (Fall only)
  • ENGL 311  Writing Essays (4) OR ENGL 213 Seminar in Creative Writing (4) OR COMM 245
    Introduction to Media Writing  (4) OR ENGL 315 Advanced Writing Seminar (4) with permission of Education Department Chair
  • COMM 350 Intercultural Communication (4) OR  COMM 351 Gender and Communication (4) OR an upper-division literature elective (A course emphasizing cultural studies is recommended)
  • An upper-division elective in ENGL or COMM (4)  (ENGL 387 Intro to Linguistics is recommended)

Speech Requirement

The Speech Requirement must be fulfilled prior to acceptance into the Education major/minor in one of the following ways:

  1. High School speech in 10th grade or higher (with a grade of "B" or better - must be listed on high school transcript)
  2. COMM 111, Public Speaking, 4 credit course
  3. COMM 200, Public Speaking Basics, 2 credit course
  4. Speech Adequacy Test (see Education Department Handbook, Section VIII)

NOTE: If a student takes the Speech Adequacy Test and does not pass, or if a student's oral communication skills are in question, a college level speech course will be required.)
