Major Requirements

Students can complete the Economics major in four different ways:

• A major in Economics
• A major in Economics with a Policy Concentration
• A major in Economics with a Finance Concentration
• A major in Economics with a Data Analytics Concentration

The department’s curriculum is based on a three-tiered system. The one-semester introductory economics course, ECON 111 comprises Tier I and provides the background for Tier II. The micro/macro theory and quantitative methods sequence, ECON 332/333/334, and applied courses requiring only ECON 111 comprise Tier II. Tier III contains the department’s upper-division courses that require both micro/macro theory and quantitative methods; this tier culminates with the senior research course, ECON 384.

The tiered structure is designed to ensure that our students acquire both a breadth and depth of understanding of the economics literature and also get skills in quantitative reasoning and analyzing data.

A major in Economics with no concentration is a great option for students seeking to double major in a different discipline, pursue study abroad and/or pick up a couple of minors. The Economics major has breadth and depth to prepare students to attend graduate school (with a minor or double Major in mathematics), or start a job in the corporate sector, prepare for law school or work at a bank or with the government.

For students especially interested in careers in finance such as mutual funds or investment banking or interested in pursuing graduate school in Finance we offer a major in Economics with a Finance Concentration.

For students interested in public policy issues and wishing to work for a non-profit or a research think tank or interested in pursuing graduate school in Public Policy we offer a major in Economics with a Policy Concentration.

For students interested in Data Analytics and wishing to hone skills to prepare them to be data analysts or pursue graduate school in Data Sciences or Business we offer a major in Economics with a Data Analytics Concentration.

Students planning to complete the Economics Minor need to keep in mind the Econ 334 prerequisite on all Tier III courses.
