Tier One

Economics 111 – Introduction to Economics course

Tier Two

Application and theory courses that build on the EC 111 -- Introduction to Economics course.  Numbered between 300 and 349, most Tier Two courses have at least Econ 111 as a pre-requisite and fall into the following two categories.

EC 300 - 329: These courses build on the Tier I foundation to address in greater depth particular areas of economic theory and application.  Current topics explored in the Tier II courses include the Economics of Financial Institutions and Markets (EC 314), American Economic History (315), Asian Economies (316), International Economics (317), Environmental and Natural Resource Economics (318), Economics of the Public Sector (323), Political Economy of Gender and Race (325), History of Economic Thought (326), Economic Thought and Religious Values (327), and Economics, Philosophy and Method (328).

EC 332-334: These three courses represent the gateway into the Economics major and minor.  Microeconomic Theory (332), Macroeconomic Theory (333), and Quantitative Methods in Economics (334) provide the necessary theoretical underpinnings for advanced study in economics.

Tier Three

advanced theory and policy courses that build on the work of EC 332, 333, and 334.  Numbered 350-399, these are advanced courses in analysis and applications and are primarily intended for economics majors and minors.

EC 384 (Research Project in Economics): The capstone course for the CSB/SJU economic major, 384 is a directed research experience in economics. Each student intensively explores a topic that builds on their coursework and addresses a significant economic question.

• Most Tier Two courses require Econ 111.
• Econ 332 requires Econ 111 and either Math 119 or Math 123.
• Econ 333 requires Econ 332.
• Econ 334 requires Math 124, Econ 332 and either one other Econ 300-level course or concurrent enrollment in Econ 333.
• All Tier Three courses require at least Econ 332.
