Economics Major Requirements

NOTE:  These requirements apply to students entering CSB/SJU in Fall 2000 and afterwards.

Requirements for the Economics Major (44 credits)

• Econ 111 -- Introduction to Economics
• Econ 332 -- Microeconomic Theory
• Econ 333 -- Macroeconomic Theory
• Econ 334 -- Quantitative Methods in Economics
• Econ 384 -- Research Seminar in Economics
• Four additional Econ 300-level courses, of which at least three must be Tier III courses (that is, numbered 350 or higher)
• Either Math 119-Calculus I or Math 123-Essential Calculus (as of fall 2007, Essentials is numbered 118) 
• Either Math 124-Probability and Statistical Inference or Math 345-Mathematical Statistics I

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR MAJORS

• In completing the four elective Econ 300-level courses required for the major, students may take either four Tier Three courses or one Tier Two and three Tier Three courses.
  
  
• The statistics course (Math 124 or 345) should normally be taken during the student’s second year in preparation for Econ 334, as reflected in Plans One and Two below.
  
  
• A semester for study abroad can be accommodated during the sophomore or junior year under Plans One and Two. Students should carefully plan ahead (with their academic major advisor) to be sure that both major and Core Curriculum requirements can be fulfilled in the four-year plan of study.
  
  
• In completing the required specified courses for the Economics major, students fulfill Core Curriculum disciplinary requirements for SSL, SSU, and MATH. The Department encourages its majors to take other social science courses outside of Economics in order to broaden their knowledge and perspective of the social sciences.
  
  
• Core flags are received with Econ 111 (quantitative reasoning) and Econ 384 (discussion and writing). Additional flags for writing, discussion, gender perspectives, and global perspectives are attached to sections of various other Economics courses (see the semester class schedules for these listings).
  
  
• For students considering graduate study in Economics, the department advises a minor in Mathematics by taking Math 119, 120, 239, 345, 305, and either 337 or 343. Econ 350 should also be included among the Economics courses taken for the major.
