Tommies Defend Top Spot Against CSB

10/27/2007

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (7-3 MIAC, 19-9 overall) was defeated by St. Thomas 3-0. The game scores of the match were 30-26, 30-27, and 30-23. The Tommies are ranked No. 13 in the country in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll that were released earlier today. St. Thomas peaked in the poll on Oct. 2 when they were as high as No. 6. The Blazers faced a UST team that only few in the nation, and no one in the MIAC, have yet to defeat.

CSB entered the match with much optimism and hope of knocking off the Tommies, who cling to an undefeated MIAC record and first place in the conference. Despite playing only three games, the Blazers proved that they deserve to compete with St. Thomas, as the boxscore does not tell the whole story of tonight's match. CSB came within just a few points of UST in both of the first two games, 30-26 and 30-27. However, the Tommies proved their worth as they just barely edged out the Blazers and went on to win the match.

The Blazers were led by sophomore setter Beth Hanson (Fairbault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy), who recorded 30 set-assists in the match. First-year middle blocker Laurel Heggernes (Mora, Minn./Mora High School) had a team-high 10 kills. Sophomore defensive specialist Andrea Millerbernd (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork Big Falls High School) tallied an impressive five service aces against the tough UST defense.

Despite tonight’s loss, the Blazers are guaranteed a spot in the MIAC post-season beginning Oct. 30. CSB is next in action when it plays host to No. 19 Concordia-Moorhead at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Blazers (No. 3 MIAC) and Cobbers (No. 2 MIAC) will battle for a second place finish and a first-round bye in the playoffs.
