10/13/2007

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (6-1 MIAC, 18-7 overall) entered the second day of the Wild West Tournament with a 0-2 record for the weekend. However, the two losses did not cause CSB to hesitate even for a second. The Blazers defeated the University of Concordia (Wisconsin) 3-0 in their 11 a.m. PCT match. The game scores of the three-game sweep were 30-19, 31-29, and 30-24. In the first match of the day at 9 a.m., CSB went five games as they defeated the University of California-Santa Cruz 3-2 with game scores of 21-30, 30-22, 30-28, 32-34, and 15-12.

The Blazers recovered from a tough first day and finished the Wild West Tournament with a 2-2 record. Head coach Michelle Blaeser summarized CSB’s weekend simply as, “a good tournament.” Blaeser went on to explain that they, "experimented with some different lineups and worked through everything well.”

Senior right side Theresa Naumann (Columbia Heights, Minn./Totino-Grace High School) compiled 24 kills on Saturday, inlcuding 14 kills on a .524 hitting percentage against Concordia. Blaeser said that Naumann performed particularly well when she moved to the middle blocker position throughout the day. “She was very consistent and flexible in order to meet the needs of the team,” Blaeser raved about her sole senior and captain. Sophomore setter Beth Hanson (Fairbault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) finished the day with 102 set-assists. She averaged 12.75 assists per game throughout the day.

The Blazers are next in action when they take on Carleton College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17 in Claire Lynch Hall.
