Blazers Can't Heat Up in California

10/12/2007

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (6-1 MIAC, 16-7 overall) traveled to Hayward, Calif. to participate in the Wild West Women’s Volleyball Tournament. In their 7 p.m. (PCT) match, CSB took on the tournament host, California State University-East Bay. CSU-EB defeated the Blazers 3-0 with game scores of 30-17, 30-9, and 30-24. CSB faced California Lutheran University in the 3 p.m. contest. The Blazers were defeated 3-0 by CLU. The scores of the match were 30-26, 30-18, and 36-34.

In the evening match, the Blazers faced a tough East Bay team that is currently ranked 13th in the NCAA Div. III national polls. CSB faced early deficits in both of the first two games and could not gain enough ground to mount a comeback. The CSU-EB Pioneers recorded a combined .424 hitting percentage for the entire match. Sophomore setter Beth Hanson (Fairbault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) finished with 22 set-assists and 10 digs for the double-double. First-year middle blocker Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo High School) compiled eight kills on a .375 hitting percentage. Three Blazers – Hanson, sophomore defensive specialist Andrea Millerbernd (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork Big Falls High School) and sophomore libero Lindsey Grauman (St. Paul, Minn./Visitation High School) – tallied 10 or more digs for the Blazer defense.

Earlier in the day, CSB took on another tough opponent in Cal Lutheran. The Blazers played it close in the first and third games, but could not get quite near enough as the end of the games approached. The CLU Regals used their momentum from a tight game one win to defeat CSB in the second game. The Blazers forced game three way past regulation and were barely edged out in a 36-34 loss that gave the Regals the match victory. Hanson recorded 29 assists and 15 digs for her first of two double-doubles on the day. Senior right side Theresa Naumann (Columbia Heights, Minn./Totino-Grace High School), sophomore outside hitter Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing High School) and first-year middle blocker Laurel Heggernes (Mora, Minn./Mora High School) all finished the match with seven kills for CSB. Naumann led the charge with a .248 hitting percentage.

The Blazers are next in action on Saturday, Oct. 13 when they return for the second day of the Wild West Women’s Volleyball Tournament at California State University-East Bay. CSB is slotted to take on California-Santa Cruz in the 9 a.m. (PCT) match and Concordia (Wis.) directly after the first contest.
