The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (5-1 MIAC, 15-5 overall) went 2-0 in the second day of the IIAC/MIAC Border Battle. In their 3 p.m. match, the Blazers defeated the Cornell College Rams 3-0 with game scores of 30-24, 30-18, and 30-26. Earlier in the day, CSB beat the Wartburg College Knights. The game scores of the 11 a.m. match were 30-28, 30-26, and 30-24 and resulted in a 3-0 win over the Knights. First-year middle blocker Laurel Heggernes (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) represented the Blazers on the Border Battle All-Tournament Team.
In their victory over Cornell, Heggernes and sophomore outside hitter Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) each recorded a .333 hitting percentage to lead the Blazers’ offense. Heggernes finished the match with nine kills, only a single attack error, and three blocks. Jaynes compiled 11 kills and 16 digs to achieve a double-double in the match. Sophomore setter Beth Hanson (Fairbault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) also finished with a double-double, which consisted of 38 set-assists and 23 digs. Only a fellow Blazer, sophomore libero Lindsey Grauman (St. Paul, Minn./Visitation HS), collected more digs than Hanson in the match. Grauman gathered 25 digs, her third highest total of the season.
Earlier in the day, CSB met a Wartburg team that was determined to stay close through the duration of the match. Winning by two, four, and six points in respective games, the Blazers were just one step ahead of the Knights throughout the morning match. Senior right side Theresa Naumann (Columbia Heights, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) was r
ight on the mark the whole match as she recorded an incredible .615 hitting percentage. Naumann totaled eight kills on 13 attempts without recording a single error. Heggernes finished behind her senior captain in percentage, but recorded one more kill in the match for a total of nine kills. Five Blazers tallied more than 10 digs each in the match. Those players were Jaynes (19), Hanson (15), Grauman (13), first-year right side Amber Wortz (13 - Fairfax, Minn./G-F-W HS), and sophomore outside hitter Andrea Millerbernd (11 – Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork Big Falls HS).
The Blazers are next in action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9 when they take on Macalester at home in Claire Lynch Hall.
