Blazer Attack Too Much for Pipers

10/03/2007

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (5-1 MIAC, 12-4 overall) defeated the Hamline Pipers 3-0 with game scores of 30-20, 30-14, and 30-25. The Blazers extended their home winning steak to six games, matching the longest such streak for CSB in the last eight years. The Blazers also made it nine wins in a row with tonight’s victory over Hamline.

CSB controlled the tempo of the match from the opening serve. It was not just the scores that exhibited CSB’s control over the match. The Blazers’ performance was at it best during the 30-14 win in the second game. CSB held the Pipers to a -.097 hitting percentage while hitting .353 as a team for that game.  Sophomore outside hitter Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and first-year middle blocker Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) combined for nine kills in the second game alone.

Brown recorded game and season-highs in both kills and hitting percentage. She led the Blazer attack with 15 kills and a .500 hitting percentage as the Pipers struggled to find a defense. Four Blazers recorded 10 or more kills and four others tallied 10 or more digs in tonight’s match. Both Jaynes and sophomore setter Beth Hanson (Fairbault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) finished with double-doubles. Jaynes compiled 12 kills and 17digs while Hanson recorded 46 assists and 10 digs. First-year middle blockers Kayli Schumacher (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) and Laurel Heggernes (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) added 11 and 10 kills respectively.

The Blazers are next in action on Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6 when they participate in the MIAC/IIAC Border Battle at Hamline University. Their first opponent is the University of Dubuque at 4 p.m. on Friday. The other IIAC (Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Association) foes they will face throughout the weekend are Loras, Wartburg, and Cornell.
