The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (4-1 MIAC, 11-4 overall) defeated the Saint Mary’s Cardinals 3-0 tonight in Winona, Minn. The scores of the three-game match were 30-22, 30-28, and 31-29. The Blazers improved to 11-4 overall with their eighth straight win and fourth consecutive conference victory.
Head coach Michelle Blaeser attributed the team’s success to their ability to slow Saint Mary’s attack from the middle. Blaeser described the Cardinals as a solid team with good middle hitters. Fortunately for CSB, its blocking and overall defensive strategy not only neutralized Saint Mary’s offense, but helped spark an offensive of its own. The Blazers began with a strong 30-22 win in the first game. However, the Cardinals mounted near comebacks in the following two games. CSB held on to win both games by two and completed the three-game sweep.
First-year middle blocker Laurel Heggernes (Mora, Minn. / Mora HS) recorded a game-high seven blocks to stunt the Cardinals. Fellow first-year middle blocker Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo HS) followed the lead with four blocks of her own. She added 10 kills to help the Blazer attack. Sophomore outside hitter Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, Minn. / Hibbing HS) finished with a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs.
The Blazers are next in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3 when they return to Claire Lynch Hall to take on the Hamline Pipers.
