First-Year Middles Lead CSB

09/21/2007

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (2-1 MIAC, 9-4 overall) defeated the Augsburg Auggies 3-0. The game scores of the match were 30-18, 30-25, and 30-25. Tonight, the Blazers played their first home conference match of the season and the outcome was as hoped for. CSB improved to 9-4 overall and extended their home winning streak to five matches.

CSB jumped out to a 21-11 lead in the first game that finished 30-18 in favor of the Blazers. Augsburg fought back, but Saint Benedict’s was able hold them off. In the third game, the Auggies came on the offensive and gathered a quick 18-13 lead over the Blazers. Sophomore libero Lindsey Grauman (St. Paul, Minn. / Visitation HS) began her service and faced the largest Blazer deficit of the match. However, it was not long before CSB scored nine unanswered points and regained the lead with a score of 22-18. The Blazers were sparked by first-year middle blocker Laurel Heggernes (Mora, Minn. / Mora HS) with three kills and a block in the nine-point run. CSB held on to gain a 3-0 victory in the match.

Heggernes and her fellow first-year middle blockers Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo HS) and Kayli Schumacher (East Grand Forks, Minn. / Sacred Heart HS) left the Auggies scratching their heads. Each of the three first-year players finished with exactly 12 kills. Heggernes, Brown, and Schumacher led the charge offensively, but each one also contributed at least three blocks to supplement the defense. Sophomore setter Beth Hanson (Fairbault, Minn. / Bethlehem Academy) finished the match with 43 set-assists and 11 digs for CSB.

The Blazers are next in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26 when they travel to Northfield, Minn. to take on the Oles of St. Olaf.
