Blazers Complete Sweep, Win Championship

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (0-1 MIAC, 7-4 overall) defeated the Northwestern College Eagles 3-0 in the final match of the 2007 CSB Holiday InnVitational. The Blazers defeated the Eagles 30-19, 30-25, and 30-26. With the win on Saturday afternoon, CSB completed a weekend sweep with a 4-0 record. As the only undefeated team in the round-robin tournament, the Blazers were named the 2007 CSB Holiday InnVitational champions.

Sophomore setter Beth Hanson (Fairbault, Minn. / Bethlehem Academy) and sophomore outside hitter Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, Minn. / Hibbing HS) were named to the Holiday InnVitational All-Tournament team. Hanson accumulated 162 set-assists, averaging 10.8 assists per game over the weekend. She also contributed 39 digs and 14 service aces in four matches. As a frequent recipient of Hanson’s assists, Jaynes averaged 4.5 kills per game and compiled 67 kills for the weekend. She added 57 digs and 15 blocks to help defensively. Jaynes was named the tournament MVP for her performance in propelling the Blazers to a tournament championship.

In the last contest of the weekend, CSB defeated Northwestern in their only three-game match of the weekend. The Blazers never lost sight of their goal – a perfect sweep and championship win – and proved it in their execution. Hanson finished the match with 33 set-assists and four service aces. Jaynes added a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore libero Lindsey Grauman (St. Paul, Minn. / Visitation HS) recorded 23 digs for CSB.

The Blazers are next in action at 7 p.m. on Wed., Sept. 19 when they take on St. Kate’s in St. Paul, Minn.
