The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (0-1 MIAC, 6-4 overall) defeated the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire Blugolds 3-1. The game scores were 30-17, 30-28, 20-30, and 30-22. The Blazers opened day two of the CSB Holiday InnVitational against the Blugolds, who were ranked 25th in the latest NCAA Division III polls.
The Blazers were happy to be back in Claire Lynch Hall for the second straight day, and it showed in their performance. CSB left no question as to whose home court they were on as the Blazers finished the first game with a 13-point victory, 30-17. The Blazers were tough to stop as they recorded a .348 hitting percentage as a team in the initial game. The Blugolds made a run, but CSB held them off for a 30-28 win in game two. UW-Eau Claire made a second surge to win the next game, but the Blazers took care of business as they finished out the four-game match with a 30-22 victory.
Leading the Blazers from both sides of the net was sophomore setter Beth Hanson (Fairbault, Minn. /
Bethlehem Academy). Hanson finished the match with 34 set-assists, seven kills and a .400 hitting percentage offensively. She added 12 digs and four blocks on defense. Sophomore outside hitter Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, Minn. / Hibbing HS) recorded 15 kills on a hitting percentage. Jaynes also contributed 22 digs and four blocks. First-year middle blockers Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo HS) and Laurel Heggernes (Mora, Minn. / Mora HS) totaled five blocks each to stymie the Blugolds. CSB held UW-Eau Claire to just a .043 hitting percentage for the match.
The Blazers are next in action this afternoon (Sat., Sept. 15) when they take on Northwestern at 2:30 p.m. in their final match of the CSB Holiday InnVitational.
