The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (0-1 MIAC, 4-4 overall) defeated the Buena Vista University Beavers 3-1 in their first home match this season. The game scores were 25-30, 31-29, 30-23, and 30-23. After two weeks and seven road games, the Blazers finally return to Claire Lynch Hall for their home opener.
Today’s match was not only their first home match of the year, but also the first match of the annual CSB Holiday InnVitational. The tournament host Blazers were temporarily stunned by the Beaver attack in the first game as Buena Vista won 30-25. However, after the initial game, it was all CSB. They came back quickly in the second game and held on to a two-point victory. From there, the Blazers used their momentum to carry them through solid wins in games three and
four.
Sophomore setter Beth Hanson (Fairbault, Minn. / Bethlehem Academy) led the charge with 50 set-assists in the match. She had quite a selection of teammates to pass to as sophomore outside hitter Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, Minn. / Hibbing HS) and first-year middle blockers Kayli Schumacher (East Grand Forks, Minn. / Sacred Heart HS) and Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo HS) each recorded over 10 kills in the match. Jaynes led the trio with 20 kills as Schumacher (17 kills) and Brown (12 kills) followed close behind. Sophomore libero Lindsey Grauman (St. Paul, Minn. / Visitation HS) had a match-high 32 digs for CSB.
The Blazers are next in action at 7 p.m. tonight (Fri., Sept. 14) when they take on Simpson College in game two of the Holiday InnVitational.
