Blazers Earn Berth in National Tournament

11/05/2007

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (8-3 MIAC, 21-10 overall) received a bid to play in the NCAA Division III national tournament. The Blazers face off against MIAC opponent Bethel in the first round of the tournament. The match will be played at 3:30 Thursday, Nov. 8 at St. Thomas. CSB's 21-10 record and strong playoff run gave the tournament committee many reasons to include the Blazers in the much sought after post-season tournament.

CSB and Bethel last played on Sept. 12 when the Royals defeated the Blazers 3-1 in St. Paul. The game scores of that match were 30-27, 30-19, 16-30, and 30-22. Their previous contest was the first match of the MIAC regular season. Since then, Bethel went on to 23-8 record and was seeded No. 4 in the MIAC playoffs with a 7-4 conference record. The Royals made it to the semifinal match where they were defeated 3-2 by St. Thomas. The Blazers advanced to the playoff championship, also to be defeated by St. Thomas, which earned an automatic bid with the conference playoff victory.

The winner of the Bethel-Saint Benedict match on Thursday afternoon will take on the winner of the contest between Wisconsin-Whitewater and Concordia-Moorhead. St. Thomas is the host for the region which also includes Carleton, Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Central (Iowa).
