2007 Tennis Review

The College of Saint Benedict women’s tennis team had a stellar 2007 campaign under first-year coach Scott Larsen finishing with a 14-6 overall record and an impressive 8-2 mark in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. CSB started 9-2 with both loses coming to non-conference opponents. The pair of MIAC loses CSB suffered came from conference winner and runner-up Gustavus Adolphus and Carleton. The Blazers received No. 3 seed in the MIAC tournament where they advanced to the semifinal before falling to eventual tournament champion Carleton.

The key to CSB’s success came from stellar singles play. The headliner for the Blazers’ 2007 season was senior Megan Tiegs. Playing No. 1 singles Tiegs tallied a 21-3 season record as well as All-MIAC honors. Tiegs was also selected to the NCAA Division III Individual tournament where she advanced to the national semifinals before being defeated by eventual national runner-up and defending national champion Emily Applegate of Washington and Lee University. Tiegs also garnered ITA All-American honors. Fellow senior Jen Kling notched a 15-6 singles record which earned her All-MIAC honors. Kling was also honored by the Arthur Ashe Foundation which awards outstanding student athletes of diverse backgrounds. Kling was named to the 2007 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars fourth team. Kling, a nursing major, finished her collegiate career with a 3.41 cumulative grade point average. Junior Megan Wrobel (Willmar, Minn./ Willmar) also received All-MIAC honors. Wrobel and Tiegs made a stellar double duo tallying a 19-3 record.

First-year Amanda Forstrom was awarded most improved player while senior Angela Sigl received the coach’s award.
