1995 Review

The Blazer tennis team (16-5 overall, 9-2 MIAC third place) made a lot of "racquet" this year. CSB moved up two spots in the conference into third place behind Gustavus and Carleton, after finishing in fifth place in 1994. Third place is the best finish ever for the Blazers in the MIAC.

A 7-2 dual meet victory over St. Thomas stands out in a season full of highlights as the Blazers knocked off the Tommies for the first time in at least six years. Following the team’s spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C., in mid-March, the Blazers lost only one dual meet in the last 11 matches of the season. Included in the season-ending six-match winning streak were victories over NCAA Division II St. Cloud State and St. Olaf. CSB was the top seed in the Midwest Regionals in the lower bracket, and finished the tournament in third place.

Fifth-year head coach Jack Bowe has some big shoes to fill with the graduation of three very talented seniors, but several returning players had solid seasons. Senior Judy Robertson, Elm Grove, Wis., became the second CSB tennis player ever to receive the MIAC‘s Chris Evert Sportsmanship Award. Former CSB standout Jenny Sell earned the honor in 1993.

13-8, 7-4 MIAC, fifth place- had a 3-0 start, at the MIAC championships Shelly and Janelle Zwisky made it to the championship match for number-one doubles, Beth Gerchman won consolation round in two games, and Elizabeth Keifenheim was the consolation runner-up. Spring training trip to Arizona.
