2008 CSB Tennis Review

Second year head coach Scott Larsen led the College of Saint Benedict tennis team to a 14-8 overall record with a 6-4 MIAC mark in 2008. The successful 2008 camping was highlighted by an MIAC tournament appearance and four All-MIAC selections.

The Blazers began the season in impressive fassion, winning four of their first five matches including MIAC victories over Hamline and St. Olaf. During the 4-1 run CSB outscored opponents 28-8. First-year Kylie Huether (left) did her part during the stretch compiling a 10-0 record playing fourth singles and second doubles.

Following a loss to rival St. Thomas, CSB traveled to Hilton Head, Fl. for matches against competition from across the country. The Blazers posted a 2-1 record during the rain soaked trip with wins over Centre College and Shepard University. Senior Laura Wermager boasted a 3-0 record playing number three singles during the trip.

CSB returned to the upper Midwest with vengeance. The Blazers kicked off a five match win streak following a loss to North Dakota. Augustana, Minnesota-Morris, Sioux Falls and MIAC foes Concordia-Moorhead and St. Kate’s all fell victim to the red hot Blazers. During the five game stretch sophomore Christine Long was 5-0 in third singles as was Huether in fourth singles. Senior Mellisa Kampa (right) went 4-1 in second singles.

After a three match skid, the Blazers won two of their last three MIAC matches including victories over Carleton and Bethel.

On the strength of a 6-4 league mark, CSB secured the fourth seed in the MIAC playoffs, but St. Olaf and the weather plagued the Blazers in the first round. CSB dropped the rain shortened quarterfinal 5-2.

Blazers dotted the All-MIAC team. Kampa earned All-MIAC singles honors after a 10-10 record, as well as an all conference selection as a doubles player with fellow senior Megan Wrobel after a 10-10 mark.

Kampa was also placed on the MIAC Sportsmanship team.

The Blazers’ number two doubles team of Long and Huether earned All-MIAC honors following 12-8 season.

Wrobel was picked as MVP and recieved the coaches award while first-year Barbara Koenig was named most improved.
