The College of Saint Benedict team grabbed their third and fourth MIAC wins of 2008 campaign with a pair of commanding wins Sunday. The Blazers posted 8-1 wins over conference foes St. Catherine and Concordia-Moorhead Sunday. With the wins CSB bumps their record up to 10-4 overall with a 4-2 conference mark.
The Blazers got off on the right foot with a trio of doubles wins against St. Catherine. Seniors Megan Wrobel (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) and Mellisa Kampa (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) rolled to an 8-3 win in number one singles while sophomore Christine Long (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) and first-year Kylie Huether (Sioux Falls, S.D/ Washington) teamed up for an 8-4 win in second doubles. Seniors Beth Yokiel (Wells, Minn./United South) and Laura Wermager (St. Cloud, Minn./ Tech) cruised to an 8-1 win in the number three doubles match.
The Blazers were nearly perfect in singles play winning five of six matches, all in straight sets. Kampa rolled 6-2, 6-3 in the number two singles, Long won 6-4, 6-4 in her third singles match. Huether rolled 6-2, 6-3 in fourth singles while Wermager and first-year Elisa Husby (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) both won 6-2, 6-2 in fifth and sixth singles.
CSB carried their momentum to their second match against Concordia-Moorhead.
Wrobel and Kampa managed an 8-4 win in their number one doubles match and Wermager and Kampa needed an extra set, but notched a 9-8 (7-3) win in third doubles.
After a 2-1 doubles mark, CSB went on a tear sweeping all six singles matches. Wrobel needed an extra set, put out on top of a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in the number one singles match but Kampa had no such trouble in her number two singles match, winning 6-0, 6-2. Long won third singles 6-4, 6-3 while Huether completed a four win day cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory in number four singles. Wermager cruised 6-0, 6-2 in fifth singles while Husby battled to a win by way of a 7-6 (7-1) decision in sixth singles.
CSB will return to the court Tuesday, April 8 against Southwest Minnesota State at CSB. The match is set for 4 p.m.
