Tennis Team Scores Pair of Wins at Hilton Head

The College of Saint Benedict tennis team notched a successful 2-1 record on their spring break trip to Hilton Head, Fl. against competition from institutions from across the nation. The Blazers ran their season record to 6-3 overall and have won four of their last six matches. 

CSB’s first win came by way of a 6-3 decision over Shepherd University of Washington, D.C.  The Blazers grabbed two doubles matches to jump out to a commanding 2-1 lead. Sophomore Christine Long (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) and first-year Kylie Huether (Sioux Falls, S.D/ Washington) scored an 8-3 win number two doubles. Number three doubles duo of first-year Elissa Husby (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) and senior Laura Wermager (St. Cloud, Minn./ Tech) scored an 8-3 victory.

The Blazers Kept pace in the singles portion of the match. Senior Melissa Kampa (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) won her number two singles match 6-2, 6-4, Long won third singles 6-3, 6-2, Huether won fourth singles 6-2, 6-1 and Wermager won her fifth singles match  6-2, 1-6, 6-1.

CSB’s second victory came with a 6-3 win over Centre College of Danville, Ky. The Blazers started strong again with a pair of doubles wins. Seniors Megan Wrobel (Willmar, Minn./Willmar)and Kampa rolled to an 8-4 win in number one doubles and Long and Huether battled to a 9-7 win in number two doubles.

Wrobel notched a 7-6 (7-0), 6-0 in her first singles match, Huether scored a 6-4 win in the number four singles match, Wermager kept the trend with a 6-0, 6-1 win in fifth singles and first-year Husby rolled 6-2, 6-2 in her sixth singles match.

The Blazer’s lone loss of the trip came by way of a 5-4 loss at the hands of Hope College of Holland, Mich.
Wrobel and Kampa picked up the only doubles win, and 8-5 decision.

Singles saw wins from Kampa in the number two match 7-5, 2-6, (10-5), Huether in fourth singles 6-2, 6-0 and Wermager in fifth singles 1-6, 7-5, (10-8).

The Blazers will return to Gold’s Gym for a double header against Augstana and North Dakota on Sat., Mar. 29.
