Blazer Tennis Goes 1-1 in Winona

The College of Saint Benedict tennis team fell 4-5 to MIAC rival St. Mary's Saturday in Winona, Minn but turned the tide and scored 5-4 win over divsion II Winona State.

Against Saint Mary's the Blazers picked up all three doubles matches were unable to score enough singles wins to earn the team victory.

Doubles duo of Megan Wrobel (Willmar, Minn./Willmar and Melissa Kampa (St. Cloud, Minn./ Cathedral) picked up an 8-4 win. Sophomore Christine Long (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) and first-year Kylie Huether (Sioux Falls, S.D/ Washington) earned an 8-4 decision while senior duo of Beth Yokiel (Wells, Minn. United South) and Laura Wermager (St. Cloud, Minn./ Tech) battled to an 8-6 win.

CSB was unable to match the succsess in singles comptetion they enjoyed in doubles matches. Only Huether notched a singles win with a 6-1, 6-4 decision.

The Blazers will able to sweep third to sixth singles to slip past Winona State. Long battled to a 2-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory in third singles. Wermager picked up a 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 win. Huether picked up her second singles victory of the day, a 6-2, 6-4 decision. First-year Elissa Husby (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win in number six singles.

Long and Huether rolled to an 8-1 win in the second doubles match, CSB's lone doubles win against Winona State.

The Blazers are currently 3-1 overall with a 1-1 conference mark.

The Blazers will return to action next Saturday when they will travel to Northfield, Minn. for a match against St. Olaf.
