1987-88 Review

Of the nine intercollegiate teams at the College of Saint Benedict, the swimming and diving team has to be the most improved.  The Blazers were 3-8 in dual meet competition during the 1986-87 season.  Last winter was a different story as the Blazers were 7-1 in dual meets, fourth in the MIAC and finished the winter campaign tied for 30th at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

Under the direction of second-year head swim coach John Brandstetter and first-year head diving coach Kati Johnson, the Blazers had their best season in the school's 14-year swimming and diving history.  The squad broke 21 of the school's 23 possible records, six athletes earned All-MIAC honors and four swimmers qualified for the NCAA Division III nationals.

The Blazers were led by Amy Tri, a freshman from Hastings, MN.  Tri set 12 school records, earned All-MIAC honors in six events, qualified for the national meet in four events, became the school's first NCAA Division III All-American with a fifth place finish in the 200 yard individual medley and qualified for the national junior Olympics- all in her first season as a collegiate swimmer.

Other top performers for the Blazers included freshman Marne Schmid, St. Cloud,MN, who broke eight records, was All-MIAC in four events and qualified for the national meet in the 200 yard medley relay; Laura Colombo, a freshman from St.Cloud, MN , earned All-MIAC honors, qualified for the national meet and broke a school record; sophomore Ann Cook from Golden Valley,MN, holds six school records, was All-MIAC, and qualified for the national meet; team captain Brenda Fisher, a senior from Normal, IL, holds six school records and earned All-MIAC honors.
