Despite a hard fought 205-38 dual loss to St. Cloud State University Friday night, the College of Saint Benedict swimming and diving show glimpses of brilliance.
Senior Kaelly Simpson (Frisco/Plano) set a new College of Saint Benedict school record in the 1000 yard freestyle by breaking a 10 year old record. The previous record held by Michelle Macy of 10:44.90 was bested by Simpson with a time of 10:42.09. Simpson was named CSB’s athlete of the week on Tuesday following her three events wins on Jan. 12 at Saint John’s.
Junior standout Kelly Matzen (Eden Prairie, Minn./ Eden Prairie) grabbed second place in the 100 freestyle and teamed with senior Brittany Boegel (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), fellow junior Beth Schiemann (Melrose, Minn./Melrose) and sophomore Maria Gau (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) to take second in the 200 medley relay.
The Blazers return to the pool tomorrow when they will travel to Northfield, Minn. for the Carleton Invitational.
