On Nov. 6 the College of Saint Benedict swimming and diving team joined 45 other colleges and universities for the Ted Mullin hour of power, a pledge drive fundraising effort to fight cancer. The hour of power is named for former Carleton College swimming and diving captain Ted Mullin who passed away in 2006 from a sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.
Coach Kathy Walker’s Blazers joined over 3000 other swimmers and divers from 19 intercollegiate athletic conferences in a 60-minute, multi-lane relay training session which pledged money to the University of Chicago Hospital. All proceeds go toward sarcoma research.
While Sarcoma is a rare cancer, 55% of all sarcoma cases diagnosed annually in the U.S. occur in ages 15-29. It is the fifth most common cancer in the age group. Therefore, it is extremely important that a cure is found for this uncommon and relatively unknown cancer.
Individual donations can be made by writing a check payable to the University of Chicago and write "Ted Mullin Sarcoma Research Fund" in the memo line. Those can be mailed to The University of Chicago, Medical Center Development, Attn: Callie Whelan, 1170 East 58th St., Chicago, IL 60637.
