After one day of competition at the MIAC Championships in Minneapolis the College of Saint Benedict swimming and diving team find themselves within striking distance at fourth place. The Blazers used three top five finishes to be within 50 points of third place Carleton with two days of competition left. Gustavus Adolphus is the current leader with 198 points.
The Blazer 200 yard freestyle relay team of sophomores Alison Pagliaccetti (Virginia, Minn./ Virginia), Kelly Matzen (Eden Prairie, Minn./ Eden Prairie), Brooke Johnson (St. Cloud, Minn./ Tech) and Becca Schleicher (Avon, Minn./ Albany) came less than second from taking second place, but still earned 32 team points with a third place finish. Brooke Johnson continued an excellent first day performance with a fourth place finish in the 50 yard freestyle. Johnson and Matzen teamed up with first-year Maria Gau (Maple Grove, Minn./ Maple Grove) and junior Kaelly Simpson (Plano, Texas/ Frisco) for 28 team points and a fifth place finish in the 400 yard medley relay.
The Blazers will continue at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center for the MIAC Championships through Saturday. The Blazers are slated to compete in four sessions over the next two days.
