1989 Season Review

Despite playing in weather conditions that were uncharacteristic of spring, the College of Saint Benedict softball team completed the 1989 season with the best record and highest conference finish in the school's 14 year softball history.  Under the direction of third year head softball coach Dennis Johnson, the Blazers compiled a 20-4 overall record and a 16-4 record in the MIAC, good for an undisputed second place conference finish.

In 1988 the Blazers were 15-10 overall and 11-7 in the MIAC.  The biggest reason for the team's success was attribute to the squad's defensive improvement.  In 24 games, the most runs scored against CSB was five.  Opponents score only 35 total runs in 24 games.  Blazers pitchers allowed only 1.46 runs per game, 4.71 hits per game and compiled an unbelievable .58 earned run average.  The team allowed 2.13 errors per game.

The team was lead by Kelly Fuller, a sophomore centerfielder from Coon Rapids, MN.  Fuller, an All-MIAC selection in 1988 and1989, led the team with a .353 batting average.  Kim Stassen, a sophomore right handed pitcher from Faribault, MN, finished the season with a 10-2 overall record and an .42 ERA and also earned All-MIAC honors.
