The College of Saint Benedict softball team was swept by Concordia-Moorhead by scores of 7-5 and 5-3 to finish the 2008 regular season schedule.
The Blazers (6-15 MIAC, 10-22 overall) dropped the opening game, but were first in putting a run on the board. Concordia-Moorhead roared back with two runs in the third inning and five in the fourth to take a lead they would not give up.
CSB made things interesting with a three run seventh inning, but the late inning comeback came up short.
First year Abby Richardson (Storm Lake, Iowa / St. Mary’s) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and three runs scored. Sophomore Beth Hanson (Faribault, Minn. / Bethlehem Academy) went 2-for-2 as well to lead the Blazers.
The second game started with both teams scoring two runs a piece in the first inning. The score remained tied until the sixth inning when the Cobbers posted three runs in the sixth inning.
Senior Nicki Holmes (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan) went 3-for-4 in her final game as a Blazer softball player. Richardson was 2-for-3 at the plate and hit a home run to lead off the seventh inning.
With only one senior lost to graduation at the end of the season, the Blazers will be primed to return a strong group of experienced players in 2009.
