Wildcats sweep Blazers

The College of Saint Benedict softball team (6-13 MIAC, 10-20 overall) was swept by the College of Saint Catherine (8-10 overall, 11-19 overall) by scores of 6-3 and 12-4.
 
The Wildcats jumped to an early lead capitalizing on two early Saint Benedict errors to score three runs in the first inning.

CSB answered with a pair of runs in the third inning courtesy of a two-run single by Jillian Rigg (Billings, Mont. / Central Catholic).
 
St. Catherine turned around and scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to nullify any Blazers momentum.
 
Kayla Webster picked up the pitching victory in the first game by tossing a complete game yielding three runs off of six hits.
 
Junior Andrea Fahey (Little Canada, Minn. / St. Bernard’s) ended up with the loss going all seven innings allowing just one earned run.
 
First-year Tanya Croger (Duluth, Minn. / Duluth Denfeld) led the Blazers by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
 
The second game started with the Wildcats scoring first once again. St. Catherine scored two runs in the first inning, but the Blazers came charging back.
 
Saint Benedict rallied to score four runs in the second inning.
 
First-year outfielder Abby Richardson (Storm Lake, Iowa / St. Mary’s) connected for a two-run single that put the Blazers on top heading into the middle innings.
 
CSB’s lead was short lived as the Wildcats quickly rebounded. St. Catherine chipped away at the Blazers’ lead and the flood gates opened when Jessi McGehee hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning allowing St. Catherine to reclaim the lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
 
The night was not all a loss for Saint Benedict who celebrated senior night. The team’s sole senior Nicki Holmes (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan) was honored with a ceremony between games.
 
The Blazers are next in action 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3 when the travel to play Concordia-Moorhead.
