Blazers sweep second place Cardinals

04/20/2008

It took contributions from the entire team, but the College of Saint Benedict softball team (5-9 MIAC, 9-16 overall) swept second place Saint Mary’s by scores of 5-1 and 10-5.

The opening game did not start in the Blazers favor as the cardinals struck first with a run in the first inning, but junior pitcher Andrea Fahey (Little Canada, Minn. / St. Bernard’s) prevented St. Mary’s from doing any more damage working herself out of two bases loaded situations.

Fahey (7-6) pitched a complete game yielding the one run in the first and scatted nine hits the remainder of the game.

Junior Jillian Rigg (Billing, Mont. / Central Catholic) continued her dominance at the plate for the Blazers going 2-for-2. First-year Abby Richardson (Storm Lake, Iowa / St. Mary’s) proved to be the difference in the game hitting a two-run triple in the bottom of the second that ignited a Blazer rally.

The comeback win over a favored Saint Mary’s team set the tone in game two for Saint Benedict who was primed for a sweep.

First-year Elle Borba (Ontario, Calif. / St. Lucy’s Priory) took the mound for the second game and was roughed up to start the game as Saint Mary’s scored two first inning runs.

CSB was down 5-1 at one point and it appeared the series was heading for a split, but the Blazers didn’t back down and slowly chipped away at the Cardinals’ lead.

First-year Alyssa Kubesh (Buffalo Lake, Minn. / Buffalo Lake-Hector) led the third inning off with a single and was followed by Borba who laced a hard single to the outfield setting up what would turn out to be a two-run inning.

Just as the Blazer offense was heating up, the Cardinal bats became quite. Borba (2-7) pitched a complete game yielding just three earned runs in the win.

Borba was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI’s to lead CSB offensively. Kubesh was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Blazers went ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning when they tallied two runs to complete the second comeback and the sweep.

CSB is next in action 4 p.m. Wednesday when the team hosts Hamline University at CSB.
