Blazers Blast Scots 3-2, 11-6

04/15/2008

The College of Saint Benedict softball team (2-6 MIAC, 6-13 overall) swept Macalester by scores of 3-2 and 11-6 to record its first conference victories of the year.

The Blazers have claimed the last 18 series with the Scots and did not disappoint with strong efforts in both games.

Junior Jillian Rigg (Billings, Mont. / Central Catholic) provided Saint Benedict with the spark they needed to pick up the first game of the series by driving in two runs on a single in the top of the seventh inning erasing a Macalester 2-1 lead.

Junior Andrea Fahey (Little Canada, Minn. / St. Bernard’s) pitched a complete game yielding two runs, walking none and striking out six to record the win on the mound.

Senior Nicki Holmes (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan) was 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore Shannon Eveland (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) returned to pinch hit in the first game after being on injured reserve since the team’s trip to Orlando, Fla.

The Scots got off to a three-run lead in the second game, but the Blazers bounced back to score four runs in the top of the second inning. The game was tied 6-6 heading into the late innings, but the Blazers busted the game open with a four-run fifth inning.

First-year Elle Borba (Ontario, Calif. / St. Lucy’s Priory) was 2-for-4 with a homerun in the second inning.

Rigg followed up a stellar first game with a 2-for-4 performance in the second game with two RBI’s and two runs scored.

Holmes and first-year Abby Richardson (Storm Lake, Iowa / St. Mary’s) each added three hits apiece to insure the sweep.

The Blazers are next in action against St. Olaf 4 p.m. Thursday at CSB.
