The University of St. Thomas softball team spoiled Saint Benedict’s home opener by sweeping the Blazers 9-1 and 7-2 in a conference doubleheader.
CSB (0-6 MIAC, 4-13 overall) was still in search for its first conference victory entering its series with the Tommies (8-0 MIAC, 23-3 overall).
Maria Bye and Colleen Owen each played a role in continuing the Blazers winless drought in the MIAC. Bye (11-0) picked up the pitching victory and connected for two homeruns in the first game. Owen also hit a round tripper in the opening game.
Sophomore Beth Hanson (Faribault, Minn. /Bethlehem Academy) accounted for the Blazers sole run connecting for an RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth.
Saint Benedict hoped the late inning production in the first game would translate into a better showing in the second game.
Though St. Thomas got off to another early lead, the Blazers still managed to put together strong innings and did not allow the Tommies to take full control of the game.
First-year Alyssa Kubesh (Buffalo Lake, Minn. / Buffalo Lake-Hector) joined in the homerun hitting with a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh. It was Kubesh’s first collegiate homerun.
Junior Jillian Rigg (Billings Mont. / Central Catholic) was 2-for-5 at the plate for the Blazers during the series. Rigg missed a homerun by a couple of feet in the second game and legged out a triple.
Saint Benedict is next in action 1 p.m. Sunday, April 13 in Northfield against Carleton.
