Auggies Sweep Blazers

03/29/2008

The College of Saint Benedict softball team (0-2 MIAC, 4-9 overall) were swept in its conference opening doubleheader with Augsburg (2-0 MIAC, 6-14 overall).

The sweep marks the first time the Auggies have won two against the Blazers in a single season since 1987.

The Blazers got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first game, but let the Auggies come back. Augsburg scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning putting pressure on the Saint Benedict heading into the late innings. CSB scored a run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to force extra frames.

Junior Andrea Fahey (Little Canada, Minn. / St. Bernard’s) pitched a complete game giving up 12 hits and four earned runs.

Augsburg’s Sarah Green pitched five innings for the win in the opening game of the series.

The Blazers got out to another early lead in the second game scoring three runs in the first inning. Saint Benedict would once again allow the Auggies back into the game and let the home team score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the sweep.

The Blazers were plagued by errors committing seven in the doubleheader.

First-year outfielder Tanya Croger (Duluth, Minn. / Duluth Denfeld) went 3-for-7 in the doubleheader with two runs scored, while senior infielder Nikki Holmes (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan) went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Junior outfielder Jillian Rigg (Billings, Mont. / Central Catholic) went 3-for-7 with two runs scored and two RBI, and junior catcher Molly Bodeker (JR, Eagan, Minn.) drove in three runs on two hits with a run scored in the doubleheader.

The Blazers hope to seek better fortunes with a doubleheader against Carleton 4 p.m. Tuesday in Northfield.
