03/18/2008

In the third day of competition at the Spring Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla. the College of Saint Benedict softball team (0-0 MIAC, 2-4 overall) split two games at Oren Brown Park.

In the first game, The Blazers took an early 1-0 lead over Westminster College (Pa.) when sophomore shortstop Shannon Eveland (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) knocked in junior outfielder Jillian Rigg (Billings, Mont. / Central Catholic) on a triple in the first inning.

First-year pitcher Elle Borba (Ontario, Calif. / St. Lucy’s Priory) struck out two and yielded two unearned runs against Westminster.

Westminster scored a run in the third inning to tie the game and produced the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Blazers failed to answer with a run in the top of the seventh and took the 2-1 loss.

Saint Benedict got off to another early lead in the 2-1 win against Smith College (Mass.). Eveland drove in the first run with a single and later scored the winning run on a RBI-single by Borba.

Junior pitcher Andrea Fahey (Little Canada, Minn. St. Bernard’s) recorded her second win of the season by going seven innings with two strikeouts.

The Blazers have an off day Wednesday and will continue competition with games against Illinois Wesleyan (Ill.) and Washington Jefferson (Pa.) at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively Thursday at the Osceola Softball Complex.
