Blazers split opening series with Pipers

03/29/2007

The College of Saint Benedict softball team (6-8 overall, 1-1 MIAC) split its MIAC opening series with Hamline (7-3 overall, 1-1 MIAC).  The Pipers claimed victory in the first game by a score of 4-1 while the Blazers claimed the nightcap by a final tally of 3-1.

Junior Patty Devoy (Mendota Heights, Minn. / Visitation) started the game off with a leadoff triple and later scored of a double by sophomore Molly Bodeker (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan).

Hamline evened the score in the bottom half of the frame with a homerun off the bat of sophomore outfielder Grace Weinreich.

From that point on the Pipers scored three additional runs to claim a lead they would not relinquish courtesy of the dominant pitching of sophomore Theresa Boleen who only yielded five total hits in seven innings pitched.

Senior All-MIAC pitcher Monica Eiden (Maple Grove, Minn. / Totino Grace) took the loss on the hill for CSB, but only gave up six total hits and was able to collect 11 strikeouts.

The Blazers were able to rally in the second game of the series.  First-year shortstop Shannon Eveland (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) jumpstarted the Blazer offense by going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.

Sophomore Andrea Fahey (Little Canada, Minn. / St. Bernard’s) was brilliant on the mound for the Blazers by pitching a complete game and giving up four hits and no walks. With the victory Fahey's pitching record improves to 2-2

When the final frame was completed, the Blazers celebrated a 3-1 victory to salvage the series split.

Saint Benedict is next in action against Concordia-Moorhead 4 p.m. Thursday, Apr. 5 at CSB.
