2004 Blazer Highlights

Blazers Hold Soccer Clinic

April 28, 2005 - The Blazer soccer team conducted a soccer clinic for girls ages 12-17 over three Sundays in the month of April. They had 57 players sign up for the clinic, many coming from the St. Cloud area but some from as far away as Elk River. The clinic was a fundraiser to help the team with their extended travel this fall to Portland, Oregon. The Saint Ben's players were coaches for the clinic, which covered passing, dribbling and shooting skills as well as specific goalkeeping sessions. CSB will make this an annual spring clinic for girls and add to its efforts to expand community involvement and fill a need for soccer specific clinics in Central Minnesota.

McVoy Inspires 'Team'

the definition of a team player is someon who is willing to put the success of the team above his/her own interest.  A player will give their all and push teammates to get better when playing.  the word "team" has even becom an acronym, Together Everyone Achieves More.  Megan McVoy is more than a team player on the Blazers soccer team - she is an inspiration.  Her talent and capabilities on the field help to make her teammates better.  She is alwasy a key ingredient in the Blazers' recent success over the past three season ... Blazer Soccer Players Earn MIAC Awards

Nov. 15, 2004 - Three members of the Blazer soccer team received MIAC honors following their solid performances throughout the 2004 season. Senior Megan McVoy (Omaha, Neb./Duchesne H.S.) and junior Patti Clintsman (Maplewood/ Hill-Murray) were named All-MIAC and junior Lisa Bennett (Roseville/Totino-Grace H.S.) was awarded All-MIAC Honorable Mention. McVoy led the Blazers with 12 goals and seven assists, while Clintsman was a strong force on the Blazer defense and also contributed five goals and five assists. Blazers Win Season Finale 1-0

Oct. 31, 2004 - First-year player Adrianne Racek  (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South) scored with two minutes left in the first half and that is all the Blazers would need to come away with a win over UW-Eau Claire this afternoon. Saint Ben's, who played its final game of the season today, finished off the season at 10-7-1 overall, 6-5-1 in MIAC play. In the first half the Blugolds tested the Blazers early, but CSB hung tough and didn't let anything get through. With five minutes remaining junior Patti Clintsman (Maplewood, Minn/ Hill-Murray) dribbled all the way from the back and got a shot off but missed it just wide. Blazers Fall 1-0 to Cobbers

Oct. 30, 2004 - This afternoon the Blazers finished out their regular season conference play against Concordia. Saint Ben's fought hard throughout, but fell 1-0 after giving up a goal late in the second half. The Blazers (9-7-1, 5-5-1 MIAC), who had a 8-1 advantage on corner kicks for the game, earned the first corner kick of the game five minutes in, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. The Cobbers put a lot of pressure on Saint Ben's, but the Blazers played tough defense and held them scoreless through the first 45 minutes ... Full Story

The Record Oct. 28, 2004 - A confident and energetic "One, two, three BLAZERS!" emerges from inside the Blazers' huddle as players prepare to take the field. The voice leading the cheer is junior goalkeeper Amanda Broadbent's. After two years of playing back-up to a top goalie from the MIAC, Tae Ruppe, Broadbent is getting a chance to show everybody what she is all about ... Full Story

Blazers Cruise to 4-1 Win Over Royals

Oct. 27, 2004 - This afternoon the Blazer soccer team (9-6-1, 5-4-1 MIAC seventh) scored two goals in each half en route to a 4-1 victory over the Bethel Royals (4-12-1, 1-9-0 MIAC). Saint Ben's attacked hard immediately and two minutes in junior Lisa Bennett scored off a pass from junior Patti Clintsman. The Blazers scored again ten minutes later when senior Kirsten Horn  knocked in a goal to send CSB up 2-0. Blazers Upset by Cardinals 1-0

Oct. 23, 2004 - Amy Cory scored the winning goal off a corner kick with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation to give St. Mary's a 1-0 victory over the Blazers this afternoon in Winona, Minn. The Cardinals had not beaten Saint Ben's since a 2-0 win on Oct. 29, 1994. Cory's goal was the Cardinals' only shot of the game, while the Blazers fired 13 shots on goal. With the loss Saint Ben's falls to 8-6-1 overall and 4-4-1 in MIAC play (seventh place), while the Cardinals move to 6-9-1 overall and 3-6-0 in MIAC action. The Blazers will return home this week for their final three games of the regular season. Doyle Named Blazer Athlete of the Week

Oct. 20, 2004 - Senior midfielder Erin Doyle (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) was named this week’s Blazer Athlete of the Week. On Friday, Oct. 15 in a crucial game against league-leading Macalester, Doyle scored a goal to tie the game at 1-1 late in the second half. The game remained scoreless through two overtime periods and the Blazers escaped with a tie. On Sunday, Oct. 17 Doyle netted her second goal of the weekend to help the Blazers to a 3-1 win over UM – Morris. The Blazer soccer team currently holds an overall record of 8-5-1, 4-3-1 in MIAC play and is in sixth place overall in the MIAC Standings. Saint Ben’s has three conference games remaining as they battle for a spot in the postseason playoffs.

Blazers Cruise to 3-1 Victory over UM-Morris

Oct. 17, 2004 - This afternoon the Blazer soccer team traveled to Morris, Minn. for a non-conference clash with UM-Morris. Saint Ben's improved to 8-5-1, 4-3-1 MIAC with a 3-1 win. Senior Megan McVoy (Omaha, Neb./Duchesne H.S.) netted two goals and senior Erin Doyle (Fargo, N.D./ Fargo North) added a goal to lead the Blazers to victory. Saint Ben's had 13 shots on goal, while junior goalkeeper Amanda Broadbent (Arvada, Colo./D'Evelyn) was solid in the nets with six saves. The Blazers are next in action at 1:00 on Saturday at St. Mary's where they will continue to battle for position to make the postseason playoffs.

Blazers Battle to 1-1 Tie With League-Leading Macalester

Oct. 15, 2004 - The Blazers (7-5-1, 4-3-1 MIAC fifth place) brought their "A" game to St. Paul tonight as they battled to a 1-1 tie with the Macalester Scots (12-1-1, 8-0-1 MIAC) in two overtimes. Saint Ben's handed the league-leading Scots their first tie of of the season in tonight's contest. Macalester went up 1-0 in the 81st minute on a goal by sophomore Anna Borton. Less than a minute later the Blazers responded when senior Erin Doyle (Fargo, N.D./ Fargo North) netted a goal to tie the game at 1-1. There were no goals scored throughout two overtime periods and Saint Ben's came away with a huge tie as they look to get back into position for a playoff spot. CSB will take a break from MIAC action on Sunday to take on U of MN-Morris. Kick-off is 1 p.m ... Stats

Auggies Slip Past Blazers in Overtime

Oct. 12, 2004 - This afternoon the Blazer soccer team (7-5-0, 4-3-0 MIAC) dropped to fifth place in the MIAC standings after suffering its second consecutive conference loss to Augsburg 2-1 in overtime. Saint Ben's grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute on a goal from junior Patti Clintsman (Maplewood/Hill-Murray). Augsburg came back to tie the game in the 79th minute and went on to win with 5:33 left in the secon overtime. Today's win moves the Auggies into fourth place overall in the MIAC standings and marks the first time in seven meetings they have come out victorious over the Blazers. The road will not get easier for Saint Ben's who will travel to take on league-leading Macalester at 7:30 p.m. on Friday ... Stats

Blazers Fall to Tommies 3-1

Oct. 9, 2004 - This afternoon in MIAC women's soccer action Saint Ben's fell to 7-4-0, 4-2-0 MIAC (fourth place) with a 3-1 loss to St. Thomas. The Tommies, who improved to 6-6-0, 4-3-0 MIAC, came out attacking in the first half but the Blazers were able to hold them scoreless. CSB's best chance to score came in the 17th minute on a free kick just outside the box, but was not able to take advantage of the opportunity. Blazers Slip Past Hamline 1-0

Sept. 29, 2004 - The Blazer soccer team (6-3-1, 3-1-0 MIAC tie for third) pulled out a 1-0 shutout win over the Hamline Pipers (2-5-1, 0-2-0 MIAC) in this afternoon's game in St. Paul. Sophomore Erin McGowan (Urbandale, Iowa/Johnston) scored the winning goal off of a corner kick in the 61st minute. Junior Patti Clintsman (Maplewood/Hill-Murray) and senior Erin Doyle (Fargo, N.D./ Fargo North) were credited with assists on the goal. Junior Amanda Broadbent (Arvada, Colo./D'Evelyn) posted her second consecutive shutout making only one save as St. Ben's out shot the Pipers 24-5. Blazers Find Back of the Net in 5-0 Win Over Gusties

Sept. 25, 2004 - This afternoon the Blazer soccer team (5-3-0, 2-1-0 MIAC) ended a two game scoring drought in a 5-0 shutout win over the Gusties of Gustavus (1-4-1, 0-3-0). Saint Ben's put the pressure on right away in the first half. Junior Lisa Bennett (Roseville/Totino-Grace H.S.) gave the Blazers an early 1-0 lead scoring her first goal of the game off a pass from senior Erin Doyle (Fargo, N.D./ Fargo North). Knights Slip Past Blazers 1-0

Sept. 19, 2004 - This afternoon the Blazer soccer team (4-3-0, 1-1-0 MIAC) ended its 27-game MIAC unbeaten streak dating back to 2001 in a loss to Carleton (3-2-0, 2-0-0 MIAC) 1-0. The game was tied 0-0 at halftime with very few scoring opportunities created by either team. First-year player Clare O'Connor netted the game's only goal in the 60th minute to send the Knights up 1-0. The Blazers were unable to make a comeback in the final 30 minutes of play. Blazers Fall to University of Chicago

Sept. 18, 2004 - Today the Blazers soccer team fell to the NSCAA poll's top-ranked Div. III team, University of Chicago, 1-0 in overtime..  Junior Amanda Broadbent (Arvada, Col./D'Evelyn H.S.) made nine saves in the game.  Chicago outshot CSB 16-4, but the Maroons were unable to put the ball in the net until 6.5 minutes into the first overtime.  Saint Ben's is now 4-2-0 overall, 1-0-0 MIAC.  Blazer soccer action will continue tomorrow, Sept. 19 when CSB takes on Carleton.  Game time is 1 p.m ... Blazers Open Conference Play with Win

Sept. 14, 2004 - The Blazer opened conference play with a 2-0 shutout win over the College of St. Catherine.  Senior forward Megan McVoy (Omaha, Neb./Duchesne H.S.) notched her eighth goal of the season in the first half.  Junior forward Kate Aubrecht (St. Paul/Highland Park H.S.) recorded the assist. Junior defender Patti Clintsman (Maplewood/Hill-Murray H.S.) scored her second goal of the season in the second half as the Blazers now improve to 1-0 in the MIAC and 4-1-0 overall.  CSB will be back in action Saturday at Macalester where they will face the University of Chicago at 3 p.m. ... MIAC Women's Soccer Gears Up for Conference Openers

College Sporting News Sept. 14, 2004 - This year’s competition in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s women’s soccer title race promises to be as strong as ever. Non-conference games have already gotten under way and MIAC play starts September 14. St. Benedict’s, Macalester, Concordia, and St. Thomas are all expected to be in the mix at the top of the standings, but the teams that found themselves at the bottom of the MIAC standings a year ago should not be counted out ... Sept. 5, 2004 - This afternoon the Blazer soccer team (1-1) hosted the Lumberjills of Northland in a non-conference game. Saint Ben's cruised past the Lumberjills 11-0. The Blazers' scoring started ten minutes into the first half when senior co-captain Meghann Green (Edina/Edina H.S.) netted a goal putting Saint Ben's ahead 1-0. Blazers Drop Season Opener 3-2

Sept. 4, 2004 - This afternoon the Blazers (0-1) hosted the Luther Norse (1-0) in a non-conference clash in their season opener. CSB lost by a final score of 3-2.

Blazers in Search of Third Consecutive MIAC Championship

Aug. 20, 2004 -- Second-year head coach Kate McNeil and the Blazer soccer team began their first practice of the 2004 season this morning.  CSB enters the year with optimism and high hopes of claiming a third straight MIAC title. The Blazers come off an impressive 2003 season going 15-2-3 overall and 9-0-2 in MIAC play.  The season begins Saturday, September 4th when CSB will face Luther College at home.  Conference play will start Tuesday, September 14th when the Blazers face St. Catherine's at their home field ...
