For the second straight game, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team couldn’t find a way to scratch out a win as the Aurora University Spartans defeated the Blazers of the College of St. Benedict 1-0. Friday afternoon’s game featured two of the best women’s soccer programs in the Central region of Division III women’s soccer. The Spartans (7-0 NAC, 11-2-1 overall) managed to win their 11th straight game, although they were outplayed for most of the afternoon. The Blazers (7-1 MIAC, 12-2 overall) controlled the tempo of the game and out-shot the Spartans 24-6.
At 6:25 of the contest, Aurora staged a quick 1-0 lead from the foot of junior forward Allison Bailey. The Blazers poured on the offensive attack throughout the game, but couldn’t find a way to score, despite putting 14 shots-on-goal. Tina Lisk (Louisville, Colo. /Monarch) led the attack for the Blazers with five shots on goal while junior defender Sam Vanderlinde (Maple Plain, Minn. /Watertown-Mayer) accounted for another three. Goalkeeper Shannon Strohm (Burnsville, Minn. /Apple Valley) suffered her second loss of the season.
Aurora provided the toughest challenge of the season thus far for the Blazers, and competition at this level will only make the Blazers better down the stretch. The Blazers face another steep challenge when they take on defending Division III champions, Wheaton College, at 2:00 p.m. in Wheaton, IL.
