Perfect Season Ends 1-0

10/09/2007

The College of Saint Benedict soccer team saw its perfect season fade away on the coldest evening of October. Hamline University pulled off the biggest upset so far this season in the MIAC when the Pipers beat the Blazers 1-0 Tuesday in St. Joseph, Minn.

It was the Blazers (7-1 MIAC, 12-1 overall) first lost of the season. The Blazers' 15-game unbeaten streak also came to an end with the loss to the Pipers (2-4 MIAC, 7-4 overall).

The Blazers outshot the Pipers 15-5 and managed to create seven corner kicks, but couldn’t find a way to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Hamline’s Kim Mangill scored the only goal of the game at the 63:20 mark of the second half.  The loss also marked the first time the Blazers had been shutout this season.

Shannon Strohm (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley High School) was handed her first loss of the season, snapping her streak of eight straight shutouts. Strohm hopes to start a new streak when the Blazers travel to Illinois this weekend to square off against Aurora College and Wheaton University in a pair of non-conference games.  The Blazers return to MIAC action on Oct. 20 when St. Mary’s comes to CSB.
