College of Saint Benedict soccer records continue to be broken by this year’s special group of players, and that trend continued on Wednesday evening when the Blazers defeated the College of Saint Catherine 1-0 in St. Paul, Minn. With the victory the Blazers remain undefeated, improving to 11-0 overall and staying penciled in at the top of the MIAC standings with a 6-0 record.
Every game it’s someone new stepping up for the Blazers, and Wednesday's heroics came from another unlikely hero – sophomore midfielder Emily Willaert (North Mankato, Minn. / Loyola).
In the second half, Willaert used her head to put in a corner kick off the leg of Sam Vanderlinde (Maple Plain, Minn. /Watertown-Mayer). It was Willaerts second goal of the season. The Blazers outshot the Wildcats 16-5, and where led by junior Allyson Draxler (Plymouth, Minn. / Benilde-St. Margaret's) with three shots on goal.
Even more impressive than the Blazers hot start is how they’ve managed to win close games. Good teams just find a way to win, and the Blazers seem to have perfected the art of scoring just enough to win.
The Blazers have won six 1-0 games this season, and all 11 of their wins have been by two goals or less. On the road, the Blazers have scored eight goals in seven games, but have held opponents to just one goal over that stretch.
Saturday will feature one of the most anticipated matchups of the season in Division III women’s soccer, when fourth place Macalester (4-1 MIAC, 7-3 overall) travels to St. Joseph to toe the line against the Blazers. Macelester has won or shared eight MIAC women's soccer titles, including back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. The Blazers are expecting a record crowd for the big game, even though the game is scheduled at the same time as St. John’s University’s Homecoming football game. Game time is 1 p.m.
