Blazers Remain Perfect at 10-0

09/29/2007

The College of Saint Benedict soccer team used an overtime goal from the right foot of junior Sam Vanderlinde (Maple Plain, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) to defeat St. Olaf College 1-0 Saturday in Northfield Minn.

With the victory, the Blazers improved their school record best start to 10-0 overall. The Blazers (5-0 MIAC) have assembled a defensive unit that has stymied opponents. By shutting out the Oles (2-3 MIAC, 2-8-1 overall), the Blazers have now recorded a shutout in six straight games and seven of their last eight.

Shannon Strohm (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) was perfect again in the net, recording her sixth shutout of the season. The game was scoreless until the 91:53 mark, when Vanderlinde took advantage of a corner kick opportunity for the Blazers to score the game winner. Vanderlinde has become the Blazers' corner kick specialist over the past two seasons, and has excelled in that role.

The Blazers have accomplished their 10-0 start despite scoring 11 goals in their last eight games, including five victories of 1-0. Defense has become the forte for this talented group, and has proved to be a key ingredieant to winning games.

On Wednesday, the Blazers travel to St. Paul, Minn. to face the College of St. Catherine ( 0-4-1 MIAC, 3-5-2 overall). The Blazers host Macalester College in a showdown between two MIAC contenders' at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct 6. The Blazers hope for a record-setting crowd for what could be the biggest game of the season.
