The College of Saint Benedict soccer team was simply too much to handle for the ninth straight time this season, defeating Bethel University by a final score of 1-0 in St. Paul, Minn. With the victory the Blazers remain undefeated at 9-0 and improve to 4-0 in MIAC play, while the Royals fall to 4-4-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in the MIAC. Sophomore transfer Emily Willaert (North Mankato, Minn. / Loyola) scored her first goal in a Blazer uniform, which also proved to be the eventual game winner in the low scoring affair.
Heading into the contest the Blazers, led by head coach Kate McNeil, were determined to mount a steady offensive attack, something that Blazers have struggled with at times throughout the season. Tonight the Blazers had no problem following through on the game plan.
“We find a way to put the ball in the back of the net when we need to. We are playing well right now, but things are just finally starting to click offensively. This team is going to keep getting better, that’s what we strive for everyday” McNeil Said.
The Blazers registered 16 shots on goal coming on 26 shots – both of the totals are season highs. Willaert got the Blazers on the board at the 29:24 mark of the first half, by driving home a ball off of a corner kick. It’s all the Blazers would need as one of the MIAC best defensive teams shut down the Royals attack. Shannon Strohm (Burnsville, Minn. / Apple Valley) was spectacular once again in the net recording her fifth shutout of the season. Strohm was given credit for stopping six Royals shots. The Blazers have not given up a goal in five consecutive games, and have shut out the opposing team in six of their last seven contests.
The Blazers will try and make it ten in a row, when they travel to Northfield Minn. on Saturday to square off against the Oles of St. Olaf. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
