After a sixth place finish in the NCAA Central Regional championships the College of Saint Benedict Nordic Ski team announced their awards for the 2006-2007 season and captains for the 2007-08 season. The Blazer Nordic ski team voted on individual awards for the skiers that deserved the recognition for their outstanding performance on and off the race course. The awards voted upon included Most Valuable Skier, Most Improved Skier, and Rookie of the Year.
The Blazers voted senior Kelly Wubbels (St. Cloud Minnesota/ St. Cloud Tech HS) to be the 2006-2007 Most Valuable Skier. Captain of the team, Wubbels has been the fastest skier on the team since she was First Year. Recovering from knee surgery in the off-season it was difficult for her to calm that position this year. She holds the school record for the Fastest 10K Freestyle (Skate) and 15K Classic races. She also holds 4 of the top 10 fastest times in the 5K Freestyle (Skate). Wubbels was the quiet leader who always led by example.
This season's Most Improved Skier award went to sophomore Rebecca Mueller (Brainerd, Minn. / Brainerd HS). Mueller’s teammates recognized her commitment and hard work in practice. Her strongest finish of the year was 4th place on the team in the 5K Freestyle (Skate) race at NCAA Central Regional Championships.
Rookie of the Year honors went to First Year Anna Roessler (Grand Rapid, Minn. / Grand Rapids HS). Roessler was the top skier on the team finishing first or second in every race this season. She set the School Record for the 10K Classic at Telemark with a time of 32:32. Roessler qualified for the Midwest Region Junior Olympic ski team, yet was unable to attend the JO National Championships.
While the Blazers lose their Most Valuable Skier to graduation, they will look forward to the return of many key contributors and the continued improvement of their younger skiers
Maggie Donahue (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata HS), Rebecca Mueller (Brainerd, Minn. / Brainerd HS), and Makenzie Wright (Wayzata, Minn. / Wayzata HS) have been voted by their teammate as captains for the 2007-08 season.
