The St. Benedict's Nordic Skiing team took home pride in both their team and individual accomplishments this weekend, as the women took fifth in the Classic at the NCAA Central Regional Championship at Marquette, WI, and Christi Nowak (Dayton, Minn./ Rogers) paced her team in both the Classic and the Freestyle. Nowak finished 22nd overall in both events. The rest of the team helped her out a lot in the Classic, combining for 52 points total, one more than their closest competitor, Saint Olaf. Anna Roessler (Grand Rapids, Minn./ Grand Rapids) finished second on the team in both events, as she was able to give her team the 26th overall finisher in the Classic, and the 27th overall in the Freestyle.
The Classic race gave the Blazers a chance to prove their consistency as a team. The points in the race were a combination of the top three finishers, and the top two finishers for St. Olaf had more points than the Blazers' top two. But it was senior Kelly Wubbels (St. Cloud, Minn/ St. Cloud Tech) who was able to cap a great race by providing a solid finish and fifteen points for the difference maker. Wubbels also had a solid finish in the Freestyle, as she was third on the team and 35th overall. The Nordic Ski Team has only one more regular season meet before the NCAA Nationals, and that is February 24th, the American Birkebeiner at Telemark Lodge in Cable, WI. The team will need to bring with it all the heart they brought to this meet and all the pride with which they left.
