Nordic Ski Bounces Back

01/29/2007

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer Nordic Ski Team showed their determination this weekend, coming back from a seventh place finish on Saturday to take sixth place overall in the 10K Classic, their final race of the weekend.  This finish propelled the Blazers into a sixth place finish in the NorAm SuperTour at Telemark Lodge in Cable Wisconsin, directly in the middle of the pack.  Anna Roessler (Grand Rapids, Minn/ Grand Rapids) finished 29th overall in the Classic and teammate Maggie Donahue was on her heals at 33rd overall, as the entire team showed that cross country skiing certainly is all about the team.  This meet was especially team-oriented, as it was raced under NCAA rules.

This set of rules requires that only the top three finishers from each team contribute to the team point total. While this certainly benefited Saint Benedict's on Sunday, the Freestyle event on Saturday did not go as successfully.  The seventh place was a result of 46 total points, with not one Blazer finishing higher than 36, and the next finisher at 50th.

But the next day the Blazers propelled themselves into the middle of the standings with a tip-top performance from Roessler and Donahue.  Christi Nowak (Dayton, Minn./ Rogers), who finished first on the team the day before, continued the tear she has been on, taking third on the team.  Roessler led the team for the third time in two competitions, and Nowak so far has not had a finish lower than third on the team, including twice finishing first.  The team travels to St. Cloud on February 10th for the Minnesota College Series Championship.
