Games are comprised of three 20 minute periods. If the game is tied after the 60 minutes, a sudden death overtime period of 5 minutes is played Intermission between the periods lasts approximately 10 to 15 minutes
Six skaters make up a team. The positions are goalkeeper, left and right defense, center, left and right wing.
Minor Penalty (2 minutes) for tripping, hooking, high sticking, slashing, charging, roughing, holding, elbowing, or boarding.
Major Penalty (5 minutes) for spearing, fighting, or when a minor penalty is committed with intent to injure.
Misconduct (10 minutes) Various forms of unsportsmanlike behavior or when a player receives a second major penalty in a game.
Penalty shot: a free shot (opposed only by the goalkeeper) for a player who is illegally encumbered from behind while she has possession of the puck with no opponent between her and the goal except the goalie.
Delayed penalty: The whistle signifying a penalty is delayed until the penalized team regains possession of the puck
Off-sides occurs when a player precedes the puck over the attacking blue line.
Icing occurs when the puck is sent the length of the ice from behind the center red line without being touched.
