Saint Benedict's Bush named 2005-06 Sheila Brown Award Recipient

St. Paul- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced today that Lisa Bush, senior captain of the College of Saint Benedict hockey team is this year’s recipient of the Sheila Brown Award. The Sheila Brown Award is given to a senior MIAC women’s hockey player who has made a long-term contribution to her team’s success and who has consistently competed with good sportsmanship. The following criteria are used to select the recipient: Team leadership, sportsmanship, volunteer work, academic excellence, and athletic accomplishments.

Bush, a four-year letter winner for the Blazers, has held a leadership role since her sophomore season. She served as captain during her senior year and as an assistant captain as a junior. During her sophomore and junior seasons Bush represented her team on the Saint Benedict Student Athlete Advisory Council. During her four years, she has also been involved in numerous volunteer activities including volunteer work with local youth hockey teams. Coach Neil Andruschak had the following to say about Lisa’s sportsmanship, “She is a very intense competitor. She works hard, but keeps it very clean. I have never seen her disrespect anyone in either a competitive or non-competitive situation.”

Bush, a native of Shoreview, Minn., scored eight goals and had three assists during her senior season. In an essay submitted to be considered for the award, Bush wrote, ‘Throughout my years in hockey I’ve met amazing female athletes who have taught me determination, heart, desire, competitiveness, and loyalty.’

Sheila Brown dedicated her life to the advancement of female athletics. She was an ardent supporter of providing opportunities for young women to compete in sports. Brown was the Athletic Director at the College of St. Catherine before losing a battle with cancer in March of 2005. The MIAC named the award after Sheila Brown to honor young women who embrace the spirit of NCAA Division III competition.
