Engels works hard to play starring role for Blazer hockey
Staff writer
CSB junior Susan Engel has been performing soundly on the women's hockey team this season. The forward has been playing hockey for 10 years and continues to do so out of a love for the sport. Her talents include exceptional puck handling, speed and scoring abilities.
Although she is best known for putting pucks in the net, that is not her only attribute. Being creative on offense and responsible on defense are major objectives for her. She also works hard to guide and encourage the team.
"I put effort forward to make others believe that we are winners," Engel said. "We work hard every day, play offense and defense and have fun doing it."
The work Engel puts in pays off. Her teammates see her as a leader on and off the ice. Players look to her for direction and are confident in her abilities. Sophomore forward Lisa Bush believes that Engel's strong points are her welcoming and accepting approach. She is seen as a player who reaches out and is willing to help who works hard at all times.
"Susan always wants to play no matter what," Bush said. "She is tough and very determined."
The team and coach Dave Laliberte are proud of Engel's desire to help the team play better. She is perceived as a player who works for the best interest of the team at all times. Her light hearted attitude is contagious yet appropriate.
"Susan wants to be the best, and that's what drives her," Laliberte said. "She is willing to learn and be taught."
Goals for Engel in the future are to work towards becoming an All-MIAC top contender and All American before graduation. In addition, she hopes to be a part of the production of a disciplined and classy team in the MIAC. Helping her along to her goals are all the women on the team.
"Susan is a great player, and a huge part of what our team is," Laliberte said. "She is made better by all 22 girls and wouldn't be who she is without them as well."
